If scientists spent time personally enlightening every "clueless soul"
Feb 19, 2024,20:19 PM
there would be no more time for science!
In the meantime, scientific consensus is that the operational carbon footprint is still a much larger contribution than the initial fabrication stage, and that as the grid gets more renewable, battery powered vehicles (BEV) will pull further and further ahead of ICEs in terms of their climate footprint. You'd have to be as coal-heavy as Poland for BEVs to be not worth it.
Here are some references - I didn't really look particularly hard, these were just the top cited papers on the topic:
pubs.acs.org
: "The study shows that the environmental burdens of mobility are dominated by the operation phase regardless of whether a gasoline-fueled ICEV or a European electricity fueled BEV is used. The share of the total environmental impact of E-mobility caused by the battery (measured in Ecoindicator 99 points) is 15%. The impact caused by the extraction of lithium for the components of the Li-ion battery is less than 2.3% (Ecoindicator 99 points). "
www.sciencedirect.com
: "The use of EVs instead of gasoline vehicles can save (about 60% of) GHG in all or in most of the EU MSs, depending on the estimated consumption of EVs. Compared with diesel, EVs show average GHG savings of around 50% and not savings at all in some EU MS."
Something that isn't peer reviewed, but perhaps more relevant (also the folks at ANL do good work):

- figure of interest is ES-1.
Of course, you are welcome to your own opinion - but know that scientific literature is firmly pro-BEV in terms of CO2 footprint, with specific exceptions typically related to a coal-heavy grid. If you do decide to go against current scientific opinion, then I would say that you should worry more about injecting ivermectin than about the carbon footprints of various powertrains. But if you don't trust peer-reviewed reports and the engineers and scientists at US National Labs, then I encourage you to tinker and play around with the ANL GREET model
greet.anl.gov
; you can get it in a spreadsheet so I think you should be able to modify it, but unforunately doesn't include manufacturing costs. You may also want to enrol in this course:
